Our bodies change throughout our lives. We know this logically, but knowing it and actually living through it can be two very different things.
Pregnancy can change the shape and feel of your body seemingly overnight. Hormonal transitions such as perimenopause may bring changes that seem unpredictable. Illness, surgery, medications, or changes in the lymphatic system can leave you dealing with swelling that wasn’t there before.
And while we often talk about the physical side of these changes, there can be an emotional side, too.
When Your Body Doesn’t Feel Like Your Own
Swelling can be uncomfortable. Shoes may fit differently. Rings may suddenly feel tight. Clothes that felt fine a few weeks ago may not anymore. You might notice puffiness when you look in the mirror or simply feel heavier or less comfortable in your own skin.
For someone experiencing ongoing swelling because of illness or a medical condition, those changes can also serve as a visible reminder of something they would rather not have to think about every day.
That can bring up a wide range of emotions.
You might feel frustrated. Self-conscious. Disconnected from your body. You might miss the way your body used to feel or be tired of having to think about it so much.
None of those feelings mean you don’t appreciate your body or everything it has carried you through. Body changes can simply be hard.
Pregnancy Brings Change Quickly
Pregnancy is one of the clearest examples of how quickly a body can change.
As pregnancy progresses, increased blood volume, hormonal changes, and pressure from the growing uterus can contribute to swelling, particularly in the feet and ankles. Some amount of gradual swelling can be a normal part of pregnancy.
But “normal” doesn’t necessarily mean comfortable.
You can be excited about your pregnancy and still dislike swollen feet. You can appreciate what your body is doing and still feel strange when you look in the mirror. Those feelings can exist at the same time.
Prenatal massage offers an opportunity to slow down and become comfortable for a while in a body that may currently feel as though it is changing every week. Gentle massage may also help ease some of the muscle tension and everyday discomfort that can accompany pregnancy.
Sudden or severe swelling during pregnancy, particularly swelling involving the face or hands, should always be discussed promptly with your healthcare provider.
Hormonal Changes Can Feel Unpredictable
Pregnancy isn’t the only hormonal transition that can change the way your body feels.
During perimenopause and menopause, changing hormone levels can affect many systems in the body. Some women notice changes in body composition, sleep, temperature regulation, joint comfort, or feelings of puffiness and fluid retention.
One of the frustrating parts can be the unpredictability.
You may find that routines that worked for your body for years suddenly don’t seem to work quite the same way. That can make it tempting to become critical of your body rather than recognizing that it is moving through a very real physiological transition.
This is a time when supportive care can be especially valuable, not because your body needs to be “fixed,” but because it may need a little more care.
When Swelling Is Related to Illness or Treatment
Body changes associated with illness, surgery, cancer treatment, lymphedema, or other medical conditions can carry an entirely different emotional weight.
Swelling may change how clothing fits or how comfortable it feels to move. Treatment may leave scars or alter areas of the body that feel deeply personal. Even after medical treatment has ended, those physical changes can remain.
For people experiencing lymphedema or at risk of developing it, appropriate care may include compression, exercise, skin care, and manual lymphatic drainage as recommended by a qualified healthcare professional.
Massage and bodywork aren’t meant to replace medical care. Instead, when appropriate, they can become part of a larger support system for someone learning how to live comfortably in a changing body.
You Don’t Have to Be at War With Your Body
There’s a lot of messaging telling women that every body change needs to be corrected.
Lose the weight. Reduce the puffiness. Get your old body back.
But sometimes your body isn’t asking you to fight it.
Sometimes it is adjusting to pregnancy. Recovering from surgery. Responding to hormonal changes. Healing from illness. Or simply moving into another season of life.
Massage can’t change every physical change your body is experiencing, and it shouldn’t promise to. What it can offer is a quiet space where your body isn’t being judged, measured, criticized, or asked to perform.
You can simply rest.
At Ananda Massage and Bodyworks, bodywork is always adapted to the person on the table. Whether you’re navigating pregnancy, hormonal changes, recovery, swelling, or simply a body that feels different than it used to, your session should meet you where you are today.
Your body doesn’t have to look or feel the way it did five years ago to deserve thoughtful, compassionate care.
